Grishneshwar Temple

Grishneshwar Temple is one of the oldest temples located in Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra. Grishneshwar Jyotirling temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered the last Jyotirlinga among the twelve Jyotirlingas.

This is the only Jyotirlinga temple in India, where you can find the carving of god Shiva, Goddess Parvati, god Ganesha, and Kartikeya sitting on Nandi with Goddess Mother Ganga on God Shiva’s forehead on top of the temple in white stone, which can be clearly seen from the south entry of the temple.

Grishneshwar Temple

On one of the pillars of the temple, there is a beautifully carved sculpture of an elephant and Nandi. This carving is considered a symbol of the Hari-Har meeting (the meeting of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva). Additionally, the temple has 24 pillars adorned with horizontal sculptures of Yakshas, which signify that the Yakshas are carrying the entire weight of the temple on their shoulders and backs.

The temple is also known as Grushneshwar Jyotirlinga which was reconstructed by Ahilyabai Holker in 1800 century. This temple is a nationally protected site which is 1.5km from Ellora caves, a 30km ride from Sambhaji Nagar city. The temple was built with black stone and is spread out over 44000 sq ft area. The outer walls of the temple are well crafted and scripted with idols of God and Goddesses. In the interior of the temple you will find the Garbhgruh, from here the Shivling is clearly visible which is 17 feet long and 17 feet wide. Everyone is allowed to enter into the Garbhgruh of this temple.

The Mythological story behind the name of Ghrneshwar Jyotirlinga

Many mythological stories are associated with Grishneshwar, leaving devotees in awe. One such story is when Goddess Parvati created a Shivlinga using kumkum in water, moving her palms in a circular motion. This Shivlinga came to be known as Grishneshwar.
